Spring

The spring months are very beautiful here when the wildflowers burst into life in celebration of another growing season. While the trees are still dormant, the sunlight is able to penetrate the forest floor and signal the awaiting plants to emerge in their beautiful splendor for a show of nature not seen in many other places in the world. There are many species of plants that only grow in this area of western NC and this eastern Tennessee mountainous border. There are many factors that come into play for this show of beauty. The wildflowers emerge between late March and mid-May. The show lasts until the trees come into full foliage, usually in late June.

Summer

This is the time when the field flowers begin to emerge and there is bloom after bloom until mid-autumn when the snow begins to fall.  Sometime in June, the forest fills with rhododendron so thick that the hills turn a magical light pink.  Just take a stroll up our creek to enjoy the blossoms. Bergamot, sweet william, cardinal flowers, catnip, and daisies are just a few of the wildflowers that flourish here.  There are many species of wildflowers which bloom all summer.

The summer weather includes warm days which seldom get over 85 degrees, and cool nights for relief from the hot and muggy summer weather you would experience throughout much of the South.  Our creeks and streams and rivers offer you cool places for a dip or wading or fishing.  Many unique creatures live in our streams, including rare species of salamanders and crayfish.  Tree frogs of many species and bull frogs also abound.  Our creeks are stocked with rainbow trout for your fishing enjoyment.  The native brook trout also flourish here.   Fly fishing is a popular sport in our area.

Autumn

The spectacular fall season begins in mid October and lasts through mid to late November, usually peaking in the last week of October to the first week of November. With the vast altitude variations in the area, 1500-5000 feet, some fall color can be seen from mid September through late November. The colors are rich and varied due to the many species of trees found in our ancient mountains. The deciduous trees have remarkable color ranging from the deep dark reds of the sourwood to the bright vibrant yellows of the poplar. The tall straight locust trees abound here and give a long show of color throughout the season. Our over 100-year-old boxwoods will amaze you with their deep dark evergreen that contrast the oranges and reds.

So, plan your trip here according to your ability to travel. Every day here is a beautiful day for those that enjoy nature. When you come to our cabin resort in the woods, you will find that there are lots of fun things to do in the NC mountains.

Winter

Winter is a wonderful season to get away in a nice cozy cabins in the woods.  We love hiking in winter.   It is the perfect time to explore the forest.  You can see the ridges and valleys and hike easily through the woods without a trail.

Snow is light here and the DOT does and incredible job on the roads.   We have a tractor on our property for plowing out so don't worry about getting stuck, unless, of course, you want to get snowed in.  Tom and I love sledding and our hills are perfect for it.

Historical Area

For those of you interested in history, there are many old homesteads, cemeteries, churches and communities.  As you walk up the trail on our property you can see old apple trees and home sites of the communities of Appalachia.  You can walk across Kale Gap into the old WASP community that leads to Wolf Creek Falls.  As you walk through these areas you can imagine the children walking down the mountain over 5 miles to get to the school.  Many old graveyards can be found including one on our graveyard ridge.
